Amma bought a saree 2 decades ago, the only one that she had independently chosen without the “I know best” of her mother, aunts, grandma, and the rest of the brigade. Cut to present day. As I frantically searched for a good saree to wear for my farewell this week, I just couldn’t find the perfect one. “I want a saree that actually says something, Ma”, I cribbed. Amma walked in with her 2 decades old saree and placed it in my hands. “This says you always get to have a say”, she said. And, that was my first saree ever. It couldn’t have been more special or more beautiful!
This is a red Tussar Ghicha silk saree handwoven with love and adorned with exquisite hand-embroidered detailing!
This is a handwoven Tussar Ghicha silk saree with exquisite hand-embroidered designs and fabric tassels. Tussar silk is a material that is synonymous with richness and lush beauty. This material is woven using silk threads obtained from the cocoons of a specific kind of silkworms. Since most of these silkworms are found in forest areas, Tussar silk is also known to be a wild silk variety. The natural sheen of this fabric is inimitable and is perfect for festive occasions as well as when you want the spotlight on you! Ghicha silk is a unique kind of silk made in a similar way as Tussar, except that here the fibres are made of cocoons that do not get reeled for Tussar silk due to being pierced or cut. Together, Tussar Ghicha silk thus brings out a unique texture and feel. The magical feel of this fabric combined with the weaving and embroidery skills of talented weavers and artisans results in a fabric that will embrace you and make you shine! The pretty tassels made of upcycled fabric are an ode to reducing fabric waste and finding beautiful ways to make it part of products.

Rose and Dan were star-crossed lovers. They always met in secret, hidden away from the prying eyes of their disapproving families. But fate dealt a heavy blow – Rose’s uncle cast a wicked spell on them, cursing them to lose every memory of each other. When their paths crossed, they regarded each other as if they were strangers. One day, Dan stumbled across a ruby encased in a rock. As he gazed at it, all the memories he’d forgotten came rushing back. He resolved to win Rose back, no matter what it took. Only, Rose was nowhere to be found. He searched high and low until he finally came across a wizened old woman, who told him that Rose had been stowed away in the netherworld by her scheming uncle. Dan could only wait until the spell broke.
With only the ruby as his guiding light, he held on firmly to his love for Rose. And, to reward his belief, the ruby kept him young, as young as the day he’d found it. When time and destiny finally had their way, they collapsed into love’s sweet embrace.

This screen-printed made-in-heaven mul drape in green and multicoloured hues is beautiful!
The designs on this fabric come alive on our made-in-heaven mul sarees through an intricate process known as screen-printing. This process involves the usage of a mesh-screen made of synthetic polymers that is strung onto a metal or wooden frame at high tension. A stencil with the negative image of what is to be printed is placed beneath the screen and emulsion is applied to create a positive image that lets the dye seep through the screen. The dye is then applied on the fabric through the screen to print the desired image.
The base fabric for these sarees is the forever-favourite made-in-heaven mul.

Final Level: Wild and Free
She’d never imagined she could do it but Tara had finally completed every level of her mission. She’d deftly navigated every world and overcome every challenge. She’d emerged wiser, stronger and humbler than she’d begun. So, where did the path now lead, she wondered? What could possibly lie ahead considering everything she’d encountered and learned?
She followed the light at the end of the tunnel with growing excitement. And she was not disappointed. She emerged in a tropical haven, replete with the most exquisite plants, blossoms and birds she’d ever seen. Here was a picture of perfect harmony – where every living being was free, had found its purpose and could coexist in harmony. The jungle thrived not just because of what it was but what it nurtured – it nurtured symbiosis. And this was the final, most crucial lesson that Tara would learn. It encouraged her to be more mindful, more caring, more compassionate and more respectful of everyone and everything around her. For, when each person did that, every realm would convert into its highest state. Into paradise.
Let nature be your true awakening, when you wear this tropical-themed printed saree made of modal viscose.
Viscose and modal are bio-based fibres derived from plants. They are extracted from a compound called cellulose, which lends stiffness and support to plants. This cellulose is realigned to create a fabric that is soft, durable and breathable. When both the fibres are combined, modal imparts lightness and a rich feel to the fabric. Both the fibres are responsibly sourced and have a low carbon footprint.

“I wanted small pancakes, Mamma!”
“I wanted them to look like chocolate pebbles.”
As she wiped chocolate sauce off her toddler’s face, she bluntly said, “Food can’t resemble pebbles, Shona. What will people say? She feeds her children stones!” She cracked jokes and laughed at them. She was her own audience. She wasn’t neglected, nor lonely. But was inching closer to something that her husband called “bitterness”. He was her companion and her voice of conscience too. He saw her worth regardless of success and failure. And although she had given up on her dreams, he hadn’t.
She used to be confident; someone who knew music as a journey. But having failed to make a name in the industry, over the years, she had started doubting her prowess.
So, on her 33rd birthday, he gifted her closure. A chocolate brown saree and white roses. She looked at him in dismay for brown was her least liked colour.
“You’ve always told me that dark and gloomy colours are not for baithaks. I want to tell you that there’s no rulebook. Wear what you like. And sing your worries away. Mourn the past and move on.” Her baby chimed in saying, “We can have pebble-sized pancakes, no?”

Black as a thundercloud.
Red as Ixoras.
She had a hard exterior that was always prepared for challenges. And her soft core informed her sensitive intelligence. A rare combination of power and restraint, she was revered. Her exuberance had a muted quality; it nurtured the poise of a classical mehfil but also retained the spark of Jazz nights. In a world of passing trends, she was irreplaceable.
Was she ever aware of her charm? She championed the regularity of a Rangan Phool but with a difference. It was as if she had been fooling around in a rose garden. And had begun to smell as sweet as a rose only by chance!

Suta is because our weavers are. They’re an integral part of our success story and continue to delight and enchant us every day with their invaluable skills.
Growing up in different parts of India, Su and Ta were introduced to handlooms at an early age. When they quit their corporate careers to explore their passions, they realised the urgent need to bridge the gap between lovers of artisanal crafts with the makers of these products. This marked the beginning of their journey to establish a brand whose story begins and ends with the weaver and the loom. From the very start, the weavers were more than vendors. They were family, inviting Su and Ta into their homes and spending time with them. Since then, Su and Ta have travelled through several villages in Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Varanasi, Odisha and West Bengal, to better understand the crafts that our nation has birthed and to bring artisans specialising in these crafts on board. Suta has since set sail with a guiding compass of uplifting artisans and incorporating our nation’s age-old weaves into stunning and contemporary products. Ensuring the wellbeing of our artisans is our top priority, whether securing them regular employment to ensure the longevity of their trade, or bulk purchasing all their leftover stock during the turbulent pandemic days. From a single weaver in 2006, we’ve come a long way with our current community of more than 17,000 artisans.
We’ve also consciously tried to employ women artisans (nearly 60% of our weavers are women) and offer them a safe work environment to explore their skills. In doing so, we are proud to have offered them a means to become financially independent. Listening to their success stories and personal achievements fills us with great pride. We’re so honoured and humbled to be a part of their journey.
This handloom cotton with kantha embroidery pays homage to the building blocks of Suta and the source of this nation’s rich textile heritage, our weavers.

The growth of the water hyacinth is lush. It has neither a sense of direction nor a sense of restriction. It catches on to the water and spreads its existence like fire on dry grass. But what is wonderful about its growth is its quietness. It makes no fuss. It just does the only thing that it knows how to, even when it is considered an unwanted weed. Today, people have found a way to use the water hyacinth as a raw material. All that was required was for it to keep doing its job until time changed everything. Anything in the world can teach us about life. Isn’t it?
