Writing characters for a living often took her mind on meandering trails. She took time to name them. They were like her dolls; but not the kind you play with. The kind you bathe, feed and care for. Her characters were people she lived with. And they needed thought. This time, she is sketching a teenage girl going on to adulthood. She dissents but not too often. Prefers Billie Ellish to Taylor Swift. Journals in her free time. And takes long walks with her dog. What would one call her?

“Name her after a precious quality. Something that’s hard to miss,” Monima suggested.

After a long pause, the writer typed out the letters, UMA. And Uma was born — to rise in tranquil splendour.
